#2601 — Russian Olive Branch Flute, F# at 432Hz

$315.00

A one-of-a-kind branch flute in the key of F#, tuned to A=432Hz.

The body is a single Russian olive branch, an invasive species here in Utah that normally gets cleared and burned. I left the bark on where it was sound, so the pale sapwood, the brown heartwood and the dark bark all play off each other. The bend is the branch’s own.

Between that bend and the natural bore, this one rewards a player with some experience. Signed and numbered #2601.

About this flute

This flute was made from a single Russian olive branch. Russian olive is an invasive species here in Utah — the trees get cleared and burned as a nuisance, which is a shame, because the wood underneath that rough bark is beautiful. I left the bark on this one, and it was the right call: the pale sapwood against the brown heartwood with the dark bark around it, the three playing off each other.

The flute has a natural bend toward the mouthpiece. Despite the bend it can be played left or right handed — I play it with my left hand on the bottom and my right on top.

Key and tuning

It came out in the key of F#, and I tuned it to A=432Hz. That frequency is associated with the natural vibrations of the earth and is believed by many to carry healing properties, which makes this a good fit for meditation or a sound healing practice. It will not play in tune alongside instruments at standard A=440, but it will complement anything tuned to 432.

Playability

Branch flutes ask more of the player than a straight body does, and this one is no exception. It takes a coordinated player and suits someone with some experience. A determined beginner could certainly learn on it, but it will ask more of you than a standard flute would. If this is your first flute, I would point you toward one of my standard flutes first.

Materials

Body: a single Russian olive branch, bark left on
Block: carved from the same branch, in the design I put on every flute
Strap: leather tie securing the block
Finish: polyurethane
Key: F#, tuned to A=432Hz

Why a branch flute

The bore follows the natural interior of the wood, so the spacing, the voicing and the tone belong to this branch and no other. They cannot be duplicated — not by me, not by anyone. Those internal inconsistencies are exactly where the sound comes from.

Every flute

Harvested, carved, voiced and tuned by hand, signed and numbered. This one is #2601, the first out of my shop in 2026. Many never make the cut.
